Cigarettes are a tobacco product used for smoking. They are made out of tobacco leaves, which are finely cut and rolled up into a cylinder of paper. People in the western world first began to smoke cigarettes in the mid nineteenth century; cigarettes were introduced to westerners during the Crimean War, a war fought between Imperial Russia and an alliance of Great Britain, France, the Ottoman Empire and other countries. During the Crimean War as British and Turkish (Ottoman Empire) troops fought side by side, the Turkish soldiers smoked tobacco that was wrapped shreds of discarded newspaper and they conveyed this habit to the British soldiers.
Since then the cigarette industry has become one of the largest in the world, and cigarette smoking has become a popular custom in countries everywhere. In the west, smoking cigarettes reached the peak of its popularity during the mid twentieth century when cigarette facts such as the effects of cigarettes smoking on long term health were not known, and various brands of discount cigarettes and cheap cigarettes were popularly marketed with cigarette ads that were freely directed at all ages and demographics. Since then and especially during the nineteen nineties and on, cigarette smoking has become much less in vogue among Americans as a result of studies that have demonstrated the link between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer as well various other health problems such as birth defects. Cigarette ads have decreased in recent years and are particularly prevented from being marketed to children. This movement has started to spread throughout the western world but has not yet had a strong influence on the rest of the world where the older generation still smokes often, and there may not even be cigarette smoke free areas in many parts of the public (many of the younger generation around the world, however, have begun to smoke less).
Some of the most popular brands of cigarette include Marlboro cigarettes, Newport cigarettes and Camel cigarettes. Cigarette companies have continued to show strong profits despite decreasing sales. With cigarette coupons you can get good prices for many of the most popular brands of cigarettes. You can also buy tax free cigarettes from the duty free stores in various parts of the world and in many airports, although some say that the money that you save on not paying tax is compensated for in a somewhat higher price. As smoking is a habit that is bad for your health and which tends to be expensive, many are now trying hard to quit.
